Chlorides
Water forms the basis of the internal environment. Disturbances in water metabolism and fundamental ions (Na, K Cl) are common. Sodium is the main cation and binds the most water. The determination of sodium ions in the blood is used to detect hyponatremia or hypernatremia accompanied by dehydration, swelling. In contrast, chlorides (Cl) are the main anion and their level is increasing as the level of sodium is decreasing, and vice versa. It participates in maintaining a constant internal environment, such as osmotic pressure or acid-base balance. Potassium is the main ion inside cells. It works with sodium and chlorides to regulate the amount of fluid in the body, stimulate muscle contraction and maintain acid-base balance.

What does elevated chloride in the blood mean?
An elevated chloride concentration usually indicates dehydration, but it can also occur with a high sodium concentration in the blood. The cause may be kidney failure, which also retains other anions (sulfates, phosphates) and develops renal metabolic acidosis.
How to reduce high chloride levels?
Treatment of high chloride levels ALWAYS begins with a visit to a doctor to diagnose the underlying cause. Since dehydration is usually the culprit, you will be advised to strictly follow a drinking regimen and properly hydrate your body.
How to replenish chlorides?
If you find that you are deficient in chlorides, we recommend changing your diet. Foods with higher amounts of chlorides include seaweed, rye, tomatoes, lettuce, celery, and olives. Potassium chloride is a common salt substitute.
