Anticipation refers to the tendency for some diseases to become more common and more severe in subsequent generations. It occurs most commonly in genetic diseases of the nervous system, such as Huntington’s disease, myotonic dystrophy, and fragile X syndrome. It is caused by a mutation called a trinucleotide repeat expansion, where sequences of three DNA nucleotides are repeated several times in a row (1).
