What ´s measured
What is the hCG hormone?
The placenta starts to release the hCG hormone approximately six to eight days after an egg is fertilised by a sperm. The laboratory diagnosis of pregnancy is based on the identification of hCG in serum. The level of this hormone significantly increases within approximately 10 weeks of pregnancy and then gradually decreases, while in the second half of pregnancy it stabilises and remains till childbirth.
If pregnancy is excluded, an elevated hCG blood level may indicate various tumorous diseases, such as trophoblastic disease or a germ cell tumour. When such conditions are present, the identification of the hCG level is important for the monitoring of therapy efficiency and the timely detection of a potential tumour recurrence.
