What is phosphorus used for in the body?
Phosphorus is a component of bones, teeth, DNA and RNA. In the form of phospholipids, it is also part of the structure of cell membranes and, in addition, plays a key role in the regulation of gene transcription, in the activation of enzymes, in maintaining normal pH in the extracellular fluid and in the storage of intracellular energy.
What are the symptoms of phosphorus deficiency?
Phosphorus deficiency can lead to anorexia, anemia, muscle weakness, bone pain, rickets, infections, ataxia, and confusion. In most cases, this condition is caused by hyperparathyroidism, renal tubular defects, or diabetic ketoacidosis (3).
How to supplement phosphorus?
Phosphorus is easiest to supplement with foods rich in this mineral, which include dairy products, meat and poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, legumes, vegetables and grains. Supplementation containing only phosphorus, phosphorus in combination with other ingredients or multivitamin preparations is also popular.
What does high phosphorus in the blood mean?
High phosphorus intake rarely has adverse symptoms in healthy people. There are studies that have found an association between high phosphorus intake (1,000 mg/day) and cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and skeletal disease (4), but they have not found any association between high phosphorus intake and increased risk of disease.
Which foods contain phosphorus?
Phosphorus can be found in dairy products, meat and poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, legumes, vegetables and grains. A small amount of phosphorus is also found in potatoes, brown rice, sesame seeds, tomatoes, cauliflower or apples.
