About this test

Haptoglobin is a protein produced in the liver that binds and transports free hemoglobin in plasma.

In cases of increased breakdown of red blood cells within blood vessels (intravascular hemolysis), elevated amounts of free hemoglobin are released into the blood and bound by haptoglobin, which is thereby depleted, causing its blood levels to drop significantly—to near-zero values during active hemolysis. A decrease in free haptoglobin levels therefore indicates intravascular hemolysis, which occurs, for example, in hemolytic anemia, post-transfusion hemolysis, and malaria. However, haptoglobin is also an acute-phase reactant; therefore, in cases of hemolysis associated with acute inflammation, the decrease in haptoglobin may be less pronounced.

Haptoglobin levels may also be reduced in cases of acute or chronic liver damage (reduced protein synthesis), malabsorption syndrome, ineffective erythropoiesis, or mechanical damage to red blood cells.

Haptoglobin levels may be elevated in acute inflammation and acute infections, myocardial infarction, severe trauma, major surgical procedures.

Notice

Laboratory test results must always be interpreted in the context of the patient’s medical history, clinical condition, and the results of other laboratory and diagnostic tests. Deviations from normal values are not sufficient on their own to establish a diagnosis, and values within the normal range do not always mean that a disease is absent. It is advisable to consult a doctor about the results.
