About this test
Obesity is now considered a chronic, progressive disease. It involves excessive accumulation of adipose tissue in the body and a gradual increase in body weight as a result of a long-term imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. It is not merely an aesthetic problem—obesity significantly increases the risk of a whole range of other serious diseases.
Other serious diseases associated with obesity include, for example, type 2 diabetes, lipid metabolism disorders leading to atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, steatohepatitis (fatty liver disease), and polycystic ovary syndrome.
The good news is that with appropriate prevention, the development of obesity can be prevented or at least its progression slowed. The processes leading to fat accumulation and the development of chronic obesity-related diseases actually begin several years before the first visible symptoms appear.
Various anthropometric indicators are used to assess overweight and obesity. Today, it is no longer sufficient to rely solely on the calculation of BMI (body mass index), which is based on the ratio of weight to height. Other parameters are also important, such as waist circumference, the waist-to-hip ratio, or the increasingly common waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), which better indicates an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. The laboratory test also includes an assessment of the distribution of adipose tissue in the body, its location, and the amount of muscle mass.
Laboratory tests are an important part of diagnosing overweight and obesity. They help identify possible metabolic causes of weight gain, flag the presence of obesity-related diseases, and rule out secondary obesity caused, for example, by hormonal disorders.
Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity
According to the World Obesity Federation Atlas, approximately 1.52 billion people were overweight and about 1 billion people were obese in 2025. Estimates also indicate that by 2035, nearly half of the world’s adult population could be overweight or obese.
In our geographic regions, overweight affects approximately 60% of the population, and obesity affects about 30% of the population.
