About this test
PT (prothrombin time) is a coagulation test that can help detect blood clotting disorders, deficiencies in coagulation factors, or impaired liver function.
It is also used to monitor the effectiveness of oral anticoagulant therapy, expressed as the INR (international normalized ratio).
It evaluates the intrinsic and common pathways of the blood coagulation cascade. It is measured as the time it takes for a clot to form in a plasma sample after the addition of thromboplastin.
The result is most commonly expressed as the ratio of the patient’s coagulation time to that of control plasma, known as the PT ratio.
Prothrombin is a plasma protein that is continuously produced in the liver and plays a role in the blood clotting process in the human body. Vitamin K is necessary for the activation of prothrombin in the liver. Prothrombin levels may be reduced in cases of vitamin K deficiency and liver disease.
Interpretation of the results
Laboratory test results must always be interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s clinical condition and the results of other laboratory and diagnostic tests. Deviations from normal values are not sufficient to establish a diagnosis. It is advisable to consult a doctor regarding the results.
