Ferritin is an iron-containing storage protein. It is mainly found in the liver, spleen, bone marrow and intestinal mucosa. Its level in the blood tells about the state of iron stores in the body. Ferritin is also one of the so-called acute phase reactants, which are substances whose blood levels rise during the acute phase of inflammation.

What´s measured
Ferritin is an alpha1-globulin, an acute phase reactant. The main functions of ferritin are to store iron stores in the body and to protect the cell from iron toxicity. High concentrations are found in cells of the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, in which ferritin serves as a rapidly utilized iron reservoir for erythropoiesis. Only small amounts are released into the blood, reflecting the total amount of stored iron.
Women are a higher risk group not only during pregnancy but also during normal menstruation when they lose iron. Elevated ferritin levels are found in various cancers, such as lung, colon, liver, prostate, acute leukaemia, but also in inflammation or liver cell damage.
The test is recommended in the diagnosis of anaemias, iron metabolism disorders, iron treatment; in regular blood donors, pregnant women, patients receiving blood transfusions; in detecting the cause of symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, pale skin, headache and joint pain, fatigue or weight loss. It can also be used as an inflammatory marker or tumour marker.

What is the preparation before blood collection?
You should arrive for your blood collection in the morning and on an empty stomach. It is also recommended to drink water before the blood collection. How can I pay for the collection?
