About this test
Apolipoprotein B (apoB) is the main protein component of atherogenic (atherosclerosis-causing) lipoprotein particles. It is a key indicator of cardiovascular risk because it directly reflects the amount of atherogenic lipoprotein particles.
Each LDL (low-density lipoprotein), IDL (intermediate-density lipoprotein), VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) particle, lipoprotein(a), chylomicron, and chylomicron remnant particle contains one molecule of apolipoprotein B. Measuring apoB levels helps estimate the risk of cardiovascular disease and is a better indicator of this risk than both LDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, particularly in people with elevated triglycerides, type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and during intensive lipid-lowering therapy.
It allows for a more accurate quantification of the residual risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, as it includes all potentially atherogenic particles. It is recommended to include it in testing for total, LDL, HDL, and non-HDL cholesterol.
Notice
Laboratory test results must always be interpreted in the context of the patient’s medical history, clinical condition, and the results of other laboratory and diagnostic tests. Deviations from normal values are not sufficient on their own to establish a diagnosis, and values within the normal range do not always mean that a disease is absent. It is advisable to consult a doctor about the results.
