About this test
Fructosamine is a glycated protein formed by a reaction between glucose (known as blood sugar) and the amino acid residues of proteins. It is a medium-term indicator of diabetes control, unlike blood glucose levels, which are a short-term indicator, and glycated haemoglobin, which is a long-term indicator.
Fructosamine is a general term referring to all glycated proteins in blood serum. As albumin is the most abundant protein in serum, approximately 80 per cent of glycated serum proteins are glycated albumin, which accounts for a high proportion of fructosamine.
Fructosamine levels in the blood are also elevated in patients with diabetes mellitus who have elevated blood glucose levels.
Serum fructosamine levels are used as a parameter indicating the degree of control of diabetes mellitus over the last 2–3 weeks prior to the test.
It is difficult to interpret a single value for a particular individual due to inter-individual differences.
Serum fructosamine testing is suitable as a repeat test in the same individual:
- in cases of acute diabetic decompensation,
- to assess the effectiveness of diabetes treatment,
- during pregnancy to monitor diabetes control alongside the glycaemic profile.
Obesity leads to a reduction in fructosamine levels in a manner that is as yet unexplained.
Serum fructosamine levels reflect blood glucose levels over the previous 2–3 weeks and are used to monitor patients with diabetes.
The results of this test must always be interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical condition and other findings.
