About this test

Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme found in most cells of the human body; it is released into the blood when these cells are damaged. The highest concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase are found in muscles, the liver, the heart muscle, and red blood cells.

Serum LD levels may be elevated in various disorders and diseases. In cases of premature and increased breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis), large amounts of LD are released into the blood, causing its levels to rise significantly. It is a nonspecific but highly sensitive marker of hemolytic anemia. Lactate dehydrogenase may also be significantly elevated in the blood in cases of megaloblastic anemia; furthermore, LD levels in the blood may be elevated in cases of myocardial infarction, acute liver injury, after severe physical exertion, in muscular dystrophy, kidney diseases.

Notice

Laboratory test results must always be interpreted in the context of the patient’s medical history, clinical condition, and the results of other laboratory and diagnostic tests. Deviations from normal values are not sufficient on their own to establish a diagnosis, and values within the normal range do not always mean that a disease is absent. It is advisable to consult a doctor about the results.
