About this test
Creatinine is a protein (protein) that is produced by all cells of the human body. Benefits of testing blood creatinine values
- Results within 1 working day
- One blood collection is all it takes
- Creatinine is a non-protein nitrogenous compound and is formed when the compound creatine breaks down, providing the energy needed for muscle contraction
- The amount of creatinine produced depends, among other things, on the weight and muscle mass of the individual, protein intake
- The creatinine test is part of the Prevention Man or Prevention Woman tests

What interests you about the Creatinine?
What does elevated creatinine in the blood indicate?
Elevated creatinine values indicate that it is excreted worse by the kidneys; high creatinine levels reveal chronic kidney damage. Its concentration also depends on the amount of muscle mass; with its loss (in old age), lower creatinine values occur.
What is the normal creatinine level?
Normal creatinine levels are between 61.9 and 114.9 µmol/l (in men) and 53 and 97.2 µmol/l (in women). Women tend to have lower blood creatinine levels than men because they have less muscle mass (4).
What does low creatinine mean?
Low creatinine levels are a result of low muscle mass or weight loss. Low creatinine also indicates that a person is suffering from either chronic kidney disease, reduced kidney function, or malnutrition.
What affects creatinine?
Creatinine levels, a protein produced by the kidneys, are affected by:
- some medications,
- eating large amounts of meat (will increase creatinine levels for 6 to 12 hours),
- drinking large amounts of water just before a blood test will temporarily lower creatinine levels (5).
Which drugs increase creatinine?
Scientific studies have confirmed that cimetidine (a heartburn medication), trimethoprim (an antibiotic used to treat bladder infections), corticosteroids, pyrimethamine (a medication used to treat toxoplasmosis), and active metabolites of vitamin D increase creatinine levels.
