About this test
Lipoprotein (a) is considered an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. It is a specific lipoprotein found in plasma that has a composition similar to LDL (low-density lipoprotein), but in addition to one molecule of apolipoprotein B (apoB), it contains another large protein called apolipoprotein (a).
Studies have observed a continuous association (the higher the concentration, the greater the risk) between high plasma levels of lipoprotein(a) and an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and a higher incidence of aortic valve stenosis. Lipoprotein (a) concentration is largely genetically determined, and its measurement should be considered at least once in a lifetime for adults. Elevated levels are also one of the signs of familial hypercholesterolemia.
If elevated levels are detected, more intensive management of other modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease is recommended.
Notice
Laboratory test results must always be interpreted in the context of the patient’s medical history, clinical condition, and the results of other laboratory and diagnostic tests. Deviations from normal values are not sufficient on their own to establish a diagnosis, and values within the normal range do not always mean that a disease is absent. It is advisable to consult a doctor about the results.
