One centimorgan is equal to the 1% chance that two markers on a chromosome will separate from each other as a result of recombination during meiosis. One centimorgan corresponds to roughly 1 million base pairs in the human genome. The greater the distance between two genetic markers—say, their two genes—the greater the number of physical opportunities for DNA exchange (3).
