A translocation occurs when a chromosome breaks and (usually two) fragmented pieces join other chromosomes. Detection of chromosomal translocations is essential in the diagnosis of some genetic diseases. A typical example of a translocation is the so-called Philadelphia chromosome, which causes chronic myeloid leukemia and a subset of other blood cancers (20).
