Tumor markers – substances (proteins, enzymes, hormones or other molecules) that occur in the blood, urine or other body fluids as a result of cancer. Some are produced directly by cancer cells, others arise as a reaction of the body to the presence of a tumor. They help with the early detection of cancer and also with the distinction between benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) disease.
