HDL cholesterol level - examination of the "good" cholesterol level Cholesterol
Adequate HDL cholesterol levels are important for your health, because its role is to carry excess cholesterol to the liver, which metabolizes it and then excreted from the body. Low HDL cholesterol is a risk factor atherosclerosis. Experts have established a minimum (low) HDL-CH value, below which if it falls, cardiovascular risk increases. Values that are associated with associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease are currently HDL-CH less than 1 mmol/l in men and less than 1.2 mmol/l in women.
People with naturally higher HDL cholesterol levels have a lower risk of heart attack and stroke. But newer studies show that people with very high HDL cholesterol have a higher risk of heart disease. Most of the time, it is genetically determined.
However, HDL (and LDL) cholesterol levels need to be assessed comprehensively together with other parameters of lipid metabolism.

A significant increase in HDL-CH values was not associated with a decrease in cardiovascular risk, and may even have the opposite effect. But newer studies show that people with very high HDL cholesterol levels have a higher risk of heart disease.
Low HDL cholesterol levels
Low levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Values that are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease are currently HDL-CH less than 1 mmol/l in men and less than 1.2 mmol/l in women.

What is HDL cholesterol?
HDL cholesterol, or high-density lipoprotein, sometimes called “good” cholesterol, helps the body get rid of “bad” LDL cholesterol by carrying it from other parts of the body to the liver. The liver then removes this cholesterol from the body.
What does low HDL cholesterol mean?
Since HDL cholesterol is involved in removing LDL cholesterol from the body, low levels of HDL cholesterol are a sign of an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, especially heart attack and stroke. Therefore, it is important to keep track of your HDL levels.
What is the ideal cholesterol level?
Total cholesterol not exceed 5.0 mmol/l. An elevated level is considered to be 5.0 to 6.2 mmol/l, and values above 6.2 mmol/l are considered risky. LDL cholesterol should not exceed 2 mmol/l and HDL cholesterol should be maintained at a minimum of 1.5 mmol/l (1).
