The thyroid gland is an organ that is involved in the control of virtually all metabolism or metabolism taking place in the human body. Through the hormones it produces, it influences the rate and manner of absorption of nutrients and interferes with energy balance. When it functions properly, adequate amounts of these hormones are secreted into the blood. We speak of disorders when the thyroid gland produces more hormones than the body needs (hyperthyroidism - increased thyroid function) or fewer hormones (hypothyroidism - decreased thyroid function).
Proper thyroid function is essential for the function of almost all organs and tissues from intrauterine development. For this reason, thyroid test in pregnant women in the first trimester has been introduced into the mandatory (screening) examination.
Thyroid problems affect about 30 % of Europeans and are eight times more common in women than in men, with the number of sufferers increasing with age. In the group of hormonal (endocrine) disorders, they are second only to diabetes mellitus.
What are the symptoms of improper thyroid function?
Thyroid problems manifest themselves with a number of different symptoms that people often attribute to age or other diagnoses. However, if even mild symptoms occur, such as prolonged fatigue or unexplained weight gain, it is advisable to consider thyroid disorder as a possible cause and have a laboratory test.
In cases of severe fatigue, lack of energy or failures in trying to conceive, a thyroid test is recommended.
A persistent feeling of warmth, excessive sweating, fatigue, weight loss without change in eating habits, feelings of palpitations, hair loss, sleep disturbances, elevated blood pressure, in women changes in menstrual cycle, in both sexes fertility disorders and many others are typical of an elevated thyroid function. In the elderly, the symptoms may be very subtle or there may be few symptoms.

The opposite of these symptoms are problems with reduced thyroid function, or hypothyroidism. The risk of hypothyroidism is higher in people with a family history of thyroid disease.
