Fatty acid profile
Fatty acids (FA) and glycerol are the main components of fats (lipids) and play an important role in the body's metabolism. Based on their degree of saturation, they are classified into saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained from the diet.

About this test
Fatty acids (FA) and glycerol are the main components of fats (lipids) and play an important role in the body's metabolism. Based on their degree of saturation, they are classified into saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained from the diet.
The fatty acid profile provides an overview of ten types of saturated, monounsaturated (omega-9), and polyunsaturated (omega-6 and omega-3) fatty acids, including the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. This includes essential omega-3 fatty acids – eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). A balanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is important for overall health.
Fatty acids play a key role in energy metabolism, serving as a major energy source and being stored in the body as triglycerides in adipose tissue. They are also essential for the integrity and function of cell membranes and are involved in the production of chemical messengers needed for normal cell growth, fat and cholesterol metabolism, and brain function. Fatty acids regulate lipid and cholesterol metabolism, thereby influencing cardiovascular health. Maintaining a proper balance of fatty acids is crucial for the optimal functioning of the body.
