Which foods contain glucose?
Glucose can be found in honey, molasses and dried fruit (mostly in dates, currants and figs). Smaller amounts are found in other fruits (grapes, dried apricots), vegetables (corn), juices, smoked ham or pasta sauce. Glucose is also produced by the conversion of other carbohydrates, in the normal diet mainly sucrose. One molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose form the disaccharide sucrose, which is used as a sweetener in many foods and sweetened beverages.
What are glucose and fructose?
Glucose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that is formed by the breakdown of disaccharides and/or polysaccharides, which are “more complex” sugars. One molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose form the disaccharide sucrose (beet sugar, table sugar), which is a common sweetener used in many foods and sweetened beverages. It is the main source of fructose in the diet. Fructose, as a simple sugar (monosaccharide), is found, for example, in honey, fruits and several vegetables. Unlike glucose, which is processed throughout the body, fructose is metabolized almost exclusively in the liver. It does not require insulin for its processing, so it does not increase its level, which does not increase the level of glucose in the blood.[19]
Where is glucose stored?
Glucose is the main source of energy for our cells. When the body does not need to use glucose as “fuel”, it stores it in the liver and muscles. The form stored in this way consists of many glucose molecules linked together and is called glycogen.
