Guardian of balance in our body
The hormonal system is made up of glands with internal secretion that release hormones into the bloodstream. These then transmit information between individual parts of the body and ensure their proper coordination.
The hormonal system is made up of the hypothalamus (connects the nervous and endocrine systems), the pituitary gland (a gland in the brain) (influences other endocrine glands), the thyroid gland (regulates metabolism, growth and development), the parathyroid glands (control the calcium level in the blood), the adrenal glands (produce cortisol and adrenaline), the pancreas (regulates the glucose level in the blood using insulin and glucagon) and the ovaries and testicles (produce the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone).
Get your basic hormones tested regularly and monitor your metabolic health. At Unilabs, we are fully available to you
At Unilabs, we offer you an analysis of basic hormones from blood and/or urine – even as self-payers, you can regularly check their levels and not wait for a recommendation from your GP. Focus mainly on the following parts of the hormonal system:
Thyroid gland
Get your TSH tested (thyroid-stimulating hormone) regulating thyroid function and fT3 and fT4 (free fractions of triiodothyronine and thyroxine), which show the activity of the thyroid gland.
Sex hormones
Don't forget to get your estradiol and progesterone levels tested – these affect the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause in women, as well as testosterone – it is key for both men and women, affecting secondary sexual characteristics, muscle growth and libido.
At Unilabs, you can order a test for special hormones – hCG hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin), confirming or ruling out pregnancy, AMH (Anti-Müllerian hormone), informing about ovarian reserve.
Pancreas
Check your insulin levels which regulates blood sugar levels and helps diagnose diabetes.
Pituitary gland
Get tested for LH and FSH (luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormone), which regulate the activity of the gonads.
How often to have a hormone test
- For healthy people without symptoms, a preventive thyroid check is recommended every 3 to 5 years, especially after the age of 35 or if there is a family history.
- For people with risk factors (e.g. family history, autoimmune disease, overweight, reproductive problems), a hormone test is recommended at least once a year as recommended by a doctor.
- For patients with a diagnosed hormonal disease (hypothyroidism, diabetes, Addison's disease, etc.), it is recommended to monitor hormone levels regularly, usually every three months to six months (depending on the type of disease).
- For women planning a pregnancy, it is advisable to have a hormone test before becoming pregnant, or possibly during pregnancy.
- During menopause, it is useful to monitor hormonal changes for the correct adjustment of treatment and symptom relief.
