What interests you about the Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) test?
What does a high ALP level mean?
A high alkaline phosphatase level (ALP) may indicate liver and biliary tract disease or bone disorders, or chronic kidney disease and other disorders. REMEMBER that, for example, a different type of ALP is increased in liver damage than in bone disorders. In healthy individuals, the majority of serum ALP is made up of bone and liver components. Physiologically, ALP may be increased during pregnancy and in children during growth.
What does a low ALP level mean?
A low ALP level is not as common as a high level. It can be a sign of zinc deficiency, malnutrition, pernicious anemia, hypothyroidism, Wilson's disease, or congenital hypophosphatasia, a rare genetic disorder affecting the bones and teeth.
What is ALP?
ALP or alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme found in various tissues, in the liver, bones, kidneys, placenta, white blood cells and in the intestine. Other, so-called oncogenic types produced by tumor cells have also been described. Determination of ALP activity in serum is mainly used to assess bone and liver diseases.
What is the normal value of ALP?
The normal value of ALP varies by age and also depends on the laboratory. Therefore, it is important to consult the test result report with your treating physician. In our part of the world it is given in µkat/l.
What is a phosphatase?
It is an enzyme that releases a phosphate group from its bond to another compound. There are two types of phosphatase: alkaline (ALP) and acid (CP). ALP is mainly found in bones, while elevated CP is mostly associated with tumor conditions (e.g. leukemia).
